Marathon

24 hour read-a-thon? Of course I've heard of it...it's called every day in grad school!

But in all seriousness...

I've been playing around with the idea of joining the 24 hour reading marathon on April 18-19th. What do y'all think? I know I definitely have plenty to keep me occupied. The question is, can I stay awake the whole time??
The cool thing about the marathon is that you can use it to work on other reading challenges (again, in the real world it's called "homework"!). I would just need to make sure that I get all my grading done before the weekend. :) Would anyone want to join me? I think it sounds like fun.
Of course, I am a big nerd and admit this in public venues. But books are awesome, and I like making lists and then crossing things off. It may be a sickness. More details later.

Believe me if I wasn't the mother of a very active 16 month old I would totally join you! Those dates are perfect too since I am flying home from Pennsylvania on the 18th... what better place to read than a plane? Oh well... Good luck Karen!

I can't tell you HOW excited this makes me!!! I've done it twice now and had a blast both times, but I've never been able to stay up the full 24 (bound and determined this time!!!). Definitely helps that you're at the early end--5 am means you can crawl into bed early morning and not waste most of your Sunday.

YIPPPPEEEEEEE!!!! (Yes, I willingly admit I am a giant book nerd as well). :D

Erin-I don't blame you for bowing out this time. Little boys are a handful! But let me know if you read anything fun on the plane.

Trish-you're going to have to reeeeally talk it up for me because I'm still nervous and unsure if I'm ready for this! I get so little sleep as it is...but what a better way to spend a day, right?

When the first one came around I was really resistant to the idea. I couldn't imagine how reading for 24-hours would be fun (I get really restless when reading for too long). My friend/coworker had planned on doing it, but she was going to be out of town for the weekend. I decided that morning to join in. It was really tough, especially since it was later--11 to 11--but I ended up having a lot of fun.

The key for me was to participate in some of the mini-challenges online to get a little bit of a break from reading. And then visit some of the other participants' blogs to cheer them on (I did bihourly updates on my own blog of my progress). I read shorter and easier books--nothing that was going to be too strenuous.

If you're reluctant you can just do it for as long as you can and just have fun with it.

But I think it is a blast. The other bloggers get really silly as the hours go by and everyone is really encouraging. Plus, it is a great way to knock a few books off the shelf (for a slow reader like me, I read about 800 pages--others were reading well into the 1000s!).
